Family Book Idea

Thank goodness for my friends who got me motivated to start this thing. When Jeni Rhees sent me a link to her new blog, I fell in love with the idea instantly and thought, "I can do this." I decided to use our blog as our family journal and record our lives. It has been so much fun and I've loved doing it. I'm not a scrapbooker, so this has been my offering to our family history. My sister directed me to a website, http://www.blurb.com/, which publishes books, and I published our family blog into hardback bookform. It was an experiement at first, but we just got our book for 2008 and I love it. I'll probably change some things next year, but overall, it's good. I wish I had a book called 1970-something from my childhood! Wouldn't that be fun? The idea is to get a copy for each of the kids and keep it for them until they get older. This year's book is an 8 x 10 hardback book with 85 pages and cost about $40. I'm sure that the 2009 book will be bigger as I got a late start on this last book, but the pricing isn't crazy for more pages. I just thought I'd share the idea in case anyone is interested.

Don't you love it? It's the main reason I blog. I made my first book last August and I treasure it, too. I like the cover on yours!

I love this! I have felt guilt for years over not scrapbooking or journaling for my kids. The blog has been the answer for me. It's fast, mess free and I don't feel overwhelmed- like with scrapbooking. Please share what you would do different on your next book!!(and what you would do again.) I've have really enjoyed getting to know your family, blogs are so great to keep connected. Thanks for sharing!!

I think in my next book I'll limit the photos to no more than 6 per page. A page with a billion pictures gets overwhelming. The best entries turned out to be the pages with one large photo or 2-3 medium ones because they make a statement. I think that I don't want a photo album as much as a family history book.

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I have heard about people making their blogs into books, but I didn't know how they did it. I will have to try it.

Gretch... I am so stoked about your family book idea! I have been wondering how to get back into journaling and the blog has been great but I couldn't figure out how to print and combine the pages. Thanks so much for sharing this idea. I am soooo doing it! =)
